Why the misattribution happened
Technical causes point to automated event tagging under pressure. Player ID confusion between Diomande and a Real Madrid player with similar jersey tracking signature is plausible. Delay in VAR review meant no manual check before publication.
AS.com published analysis La bala que le falta a Mbappé focusing on finishing and playmaking. The article contextualizes Mbappé’s form. The data error added noise to that discussion. Assist stats feed player ratings, fantasy points and contract bonuses. A wrong credit distorts all three.
Counter-intuitive insight emerges. Surface reading suggests a simple typo. From historical patterns it is systemic. Speed is monetized in live betting and fantasy. Accuracy is secondary in the first 120 seconds after an event. Multi-source印证 shows similar LaLiga assist errors in 2024-25 season.
Fan and media reaction
X users questioned the assist credit within minutes. Journalists from Marca and AS issued corrections after the match. Fans compared the incident with previous LaLiga data errors involving own goals and offside assists.
Spanish media framed it as a technical slip. International coverage from UK outlets treated it as a data integrity warning for live sports. A senior data analyst close to European feed operations noted that aggregator contracts often prohibit manual override until 15 minutes post event.
A second expert with experience in LaLiga broadcast operations argued that commercial pressure for real time graphics creates acceptance of a small error rate. A neutral sports economist added that trust erosion is cumulative. One error is forgiven. Repeated errors change user behavior.
Official correction and final stats
LaLiga EA Sports updated the official match report after the final whistle. The assist for Mbappé’s second goal was reattributed to the correct Real Madrid player. Partner apps synced the change overnight. The final stats page removed Diomande from the assist line.
The correction did not retroactively notify all aggregators. SofaScore and Flashscore updated within hours. Some social clips remained uncorrected.
