Steelers Make Roster Moves Ahead of Patriots Game
The Steelers elevated running back Travis Homer and defensive back Doneiko Slaughter from the practice squad ahead of the Patriots game. The move was reported Sep 19, 2026 at 03:01 PM by Steelers.com.
Homer gives Pittsburgh extra depth at running back and special teams coverage. Slaughter adds a body in the defensive backfield for nickel and dime packages. Both are elevation moves, not permanent signings, but they matter for depth against a rookie QB.
Impact is real. More bodies for special teams. More flexibility for defensive coordinator to rotate. New England’s offense will face fresh legs late.
What to Expect from Patriots QB Drake Maye vs the Steelers
Drake Maye Week 2 debut context comes straight from ESPN analysis. New England is handing the keys after a rough Week 1. The staff wants quick decisions and mobility to survive.
Rookie strengths are clear. Arm talent to push the ball downfield. Mobility to extend plays outside the pocket. Quick release on short and intermediate routes.
The problem is the matchup. Steelers pass rush matchup with T.J. Watt vs Patriots offensive line is a nightmare. Watt lives on the edge and the Patriots interior has struggled with pressure grades. Maye will have to get the ball out fast or take off.
Expect a lot of empty sets and RPOs. Expect mistakes. That is the cost of a rookie debut.
Patriots Today Offensive Breakdown: 3 Fatal Shortcomings vs Steelers Defense
The Patriots game today will expose three issues that Pittsburgh is designed to exploit.
| Weakness | Patriots Current State | Steelers Counter |
|---|---|---|
| Offensive line protection and pressure vulnerability | Interior line graded poorly in pass protection Week 1. Limited depth. | Steelers front seven with Watt and interior stunts. Blitz packages. |
| Lack of consistent deep threat and route separation | Receiver corps limitations. No proven separator against man coverage. | Steelers secondary with disguised coverages and physical press. |
| Run game inconsistency and play action reliance | Rushing efficiency down. Play action hinges on run threat. | Stack the box, force Maye to beat them with dropback. |
1. Offensive line protection and pressure vulnerability. Pass blocking grades are a concern. The interior struggles against power and quick games. Facing the Steelers front seven will test every snap.
2. Lack of consistent deep threat and route separation. The receiver group can not consistently win one-on-one. Against a Steelers secondary that plays tight, windows shrink.
3. Run game inconsistency and play action reliance. If the run does not work, play action dies. Pittsburgh will load the box and dare Maye to throw into coverage.
Steelers Defensive Game Plan to Exploit Weaknesses
Blitz packages will be varied. Coverage disguises will force Maye to read late. Run fits will be aggressive to set the tone early.
Role of elevated players Homer and Slaughter is mainly special teams and depth. Slaughter can be used in sub packages to keep fresh DBs on the field. Homer helps on kick coverage and gives the offense a breather.
Steelers want sacks, turnovers, and third-and-long. That is the plan.
Prediction and Final Takeaways for Patriots Game Today
Score prediction leans Pittsburgh. The defense is ready. The Patriots offense is not.
Key player stats to watch: Drake Maye completion percentage under pressure, T.J. Watt pressures, Patriots rushing yards per carry.
Post-game implications are big. A loss makes New England 0-2 with a rookie QB under fire. A competitive showing buys time. For Pittsburgh, a win builds momentum early in the season.
Patriots game today will be ugly if protection fails. That is the bottom line.
